Are Cart Systems Really Green?
K-Tec identifies five aspects of lean material handling with carts that represent a "Green" savings.
1. Less Energy to Move Loads. A train of three carts is pulled across the production floor with one tugger. The tugger stops at each station to deliver materials and collects empty carts or containers for a total of one complete run. In contrast, a forklift must make three complete runs to deliver the same amount of materials.
2. More Human Power. Materials delivered line-side on a cart are manually positioned on the line or work cell by a human. The ergonomic cart design enables ease of human handling. In contrast, a pallet of materials delivered by forklift is moved to the line and when needed, re-positioned by a forklift increasing motorized material movement.
3. Less Disposal of Waste. Since one train of carts and a tugger moves the same load as three forklifts, a cart system uses less overall motorized power. As a result, the overall use and disposal of maintenance materials such as batteries, hydraulic fluid and contaminated water is reduced.
4. Less Damaged Product. Handling pallets and containers more times with forklifts increases the chances for accidental damage, increasing waste.
5. Consolidation of Packaging & Recycling. Advanced implementation of lean material handling principals calls for the elimination of parts packaging on the production floor. Parts are staged on presentation carts in the warehouse. This action centralizes cardboard, paper and plastic used to safe guard materials in the shipping process. By centralizing recycled materials in the warehouse, the recycling and disposal process is tightly managed thus saving handling costs.

Green means Green
Too often today, claims of a green approach to manufacturing are nothing more than marketing ploys to jump on a popular bandwagon. Green means products or services that help manufacturers improve energy efficiency, reduce pollution, eliminate waste or otherwise make their operations more ecological or environmentally friendly. Using cart systems to move materials fits the Green agenda in at least five areas.
